VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is advancing the development of BEACONSAT, the nation’s first-ever military satellite and the largest spacecraft built domestically so far. This satellite’s purpose is to identify and evaluate interference that impacts global navigation satellite systems, such as GPS and Galileo. Austria plans to launch BEACONSAT in February 2027 using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The project emphasizes detecting jamming and spoofing signals from orbit, while also collecting data on when and where navigation signals are disrupted.

BEACONSAT functions as a technology demonstrator in a multi-year research program. Jamming involves radio signals that block or weaken satellite navigation signals. Spoofing involves sending false signals that mislead receivers into calculating wrong positions. Satellite navigation is crucial for aircraft, ships, vehicles, drones, emergency services, and other systems. The Austrian Defence Ministry expects that the data obtained will support operational decisions and improve understanding of GNSS interference.
GATE Space, a space technology firm located in Schwechat, is leading the BEACONSAT effort. The company was established in 2022 as a spin-off from TU Wien. It specializes in chemical propulsion systems that enable satellites to maneuver in orbit. For BEACONSAT, GATE Space provides the propulsion system, satellite structure, and thermal management technology. The company has conducted over 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport under both atmospheric and vacuum conditions.
Austrian Innovation Central to Satellite Mission
Key components of Austria’s first military satellite come from other European companies. Graz-based IGASPIN supplies high-precision technology to detect and analyze GNSS interference. Denmark’s Space Inventor contributes additional satellite parts, including the onboard computer. The project blends commercial space hardware with systems created for the BEACONSAT demonstration. The Austrian Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has supported GATE Space through Austria Wirtschaftsservice with about 750,000 euros in funding.
The European Space Agency plays a role by supporting and co-funding the project through its ESA Marketplace program for technology demonstrations. This program allows commercial space technologies to be tested for security-related applications. Austrian officials describe BEACONSAT as a demonstrator rather than an operational satellite. Its primary goal is to gather information about interference affecting satellite navigation signals from space. The results will inform Defence Ministry strategies as Austria develops its military space capabilities.
BEACONSAT Integrates into Austria’s Broader Space Strategy
Austria’s Defence Ministry is creating a dedicated space services unit. This organization will handle satellite communications, navigation, and reconnaissance. BEACONSAT is part of this broader structure, with a specific focus on navigation interference. The military’s space strategy envisions expanding Austria’s role from simply using space services to operating space infrastructure and systems. The strategy was adopted in 2023, with plans extending into 2035 and beyond.
The February 2027 launch remains on schedule, with a Falcon 9 rocket set to carry BEACONSAT into orbit. Once in space, the satellite will gather and analyze GNSS interference data. The project involves Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and several European technology companies. This will be Austria’s first military satellite mission, while also testing domestically developed systems for monitoring disruptions to GPS, Galileo, and other satellite navigation signals.
