The study highlights how climate change worsens drought conditions on the continent. A global group of climate experts found that record-breaking heat acts as the primary cause of these issues, surpassing the effects of seasonal rainfall shortages. European countries are experiencing falling river levels, water usage bans, and large wildfires following a historic June heatwave. The data shows that a warming planet speeds up the evaporation of moisture from land and water sources. This results in a highly dry and unstable environment. Even with below-average spring rains, it was the temperature increases driven by climate change that pushed the region into a critical drought state.

The study, published by the World Weather Attribution group, explains how rising temperatures deplete natural water reserves. Mariam Zachariah of Imperial College London pointed out that the drought is not mainly caused by lack of rainfall. Instead, a warmer atmosphere creates more moisture deficits on the land. This means drought risk will continue to grow even if rainfall patterns stay steady. Scientists note that a warmer atmosphere can hold around seven percent more water vapor for each 1 degree Celsius temperature rise. This higher capacity leads to increased evaporation from soil and vegetation, affecting entire landscapes.
The researchers used extensive weather data and sophisticated computer models to compare current conditions with a climate that was 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. Their analysis shows that soils in western Europe are now five times more likely to be extremely dry than in a world without human-induced warming. In eastern Europe, such soil moisture deficits are 11 times more probable. The study also found that the high evaporative demand between April and June made such conditions about 80 times more likely in western Europe. This means rainfall deficits that previously wouldn’t cause severe drought now lead to much drier soils.
Calls for Immediate Global Emissions Reductions
Dominik Schumacher from ETH Zurich stressed how soil drying already accelerates in spring before summer arrives. He explained that as temperatures climb, the atmosphere’s thirst grows quickly, drawing moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and soil. The warm start to the year, followed by extreme heat, created ideal conditions for large wildfires. The rapid drying made the land more prone to fires, which spread in multiple countries. The agricultural sector faces unprecedented pressure due to the widespread loss of vital soil moisture. Drought conditions are causing severe crop failures across borders. According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, the recent June was the hottest ever recorded in western Europe. Many nations are already imposing emergency water restrictions or bans on non-essential water use to conserve supplies.
Scientists warn that drought conditions could become more frequent if global temperatures continue rising. They emphasize that these evaporative conditions are already happening at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming. If emissions push global temperatures to 2.8 degrees Celsius, the likelihood of such conditions could double. Experts caution that without urgent emissions reductions, Europe faces a future of increasingly intense and prolonged dry summers.
